FileVault Users Missing on Mac Boot
Well this is a first, I have never until today encountered this issue.
My immediate thought was that the user just needed to be Enabled in the System Preferences to unlock the volume at boot – which is quite normal, and yes, they weren’t enabled, so I enabled this user, rebooted and thought all would be fine, but still, this user account was not enabled. Strange – and this is where I have never encountered this.
So after a little bit of investigation on the troublesome Mac and a bit of Google-Foo – I believe I managed to correct the issue, and it seems to mainly affect users of Mac OS High Sierra (10.13.x) where the file system is APFS and not Ext3 Journaled.
The fix for me was to:
- Login using as Administrative account (which I already was)
- Open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities)
- Enter in the command:
-
sudo diskutil apfs updatePreboot /
- Authenticate with the administrator account password
- Reboot the offending Mac
Once performing the above steps, the enabled user was now showing up in the list of user accounts that can unlock the start up disk to boot macOS. Hopefully this helps you!
